Which Finger Wears a Promise Ring?
This is a very simple question that deserves a simple answer. You can properly wear a promise ring on any finger you please. There is no “one place fits all people” but there are some traditional guidelines that might help select the finger that will convey the most accurate and intended meaning for most people.
A Symbol of Love and Promise of Future Commitment
In American culture, the left hand ring finger is the “wedding band” finger and virtually all newly weds in the USA place their wedding bands on this finger from the first. In many other cultures, including most in the European region, the right hand ring finger is used for this purpose.
Due mainly to the identification with the wedding band location, the left hand location has become the popular place to wear an engagement ring as well, possibly demonstrating that engagement will be supplanted (one hopes!) by a wedding event and ring sometime in the future.
It would seem then, that a promise ring demonstrating love of one for another, where the dream of future engagement and wedding is alive and has real hoped for potential, can also be properly worn on the “wedding band” finger of the left hand. In this sense, it is akin to a “pre-engagement” symbol or promise of even better things to follow.
There is, however, nothing wrong with a symbol of love promise ring being worn on the ring finger of the right hand. As mentioned, this would be especially appropriate in European and other cultures and it could be justified, too, for any couple that wishes to wear this love emblem but not have it confused with a true engagement ring. Worn on the right hand, thus, it would be worn with the promise of future replacement by a new ring to be more suitably worn later on the left hand ring finger.
A Promise of Abstinence
A promise of love eternal brings to mind rings, weddings and anniversaries for most people. But not many of us stop to think that a commitment to live a whole, pure, dedicated and healthy life is also a promise of love, whether to a parent, spouse, partner or even ourselves. And such a promise is also worthy of a sign or token of one’s intention and commitment to conduct one’s self in such a manner.
A promise to observe or live according to any particular rules regarding sexual conduct, drug or alcohol abuse, whether made by an adolescent to a parent or any other person, or by an adult to any person or institution (such as the Church or some religious order), is certainly a promise given out of love for the one to whom the promise is made. And justifiably, such a promise made out of love is befitting the giving and wearing of a promise ring to mark the commitment. In this case, the ring may be worn on the left hand ring finger signifying it as prelude to a more significant ring that will replace it in the future, or signifying the weight of the promise by showing it equal in seriousness to a promise of marriage. However, remember that it is the promise and intention behind it that is of greatest importance and a ring to signify it may be worn properly on any finger chosen by the wearer. Keeping the promise is more important than which finger bears the evidence.
A Lifetime of Friendship
In a world that is constantly changing and ever speeding the pace of life, it is increasingly hard to find or make a friend. Even more difficult is the challenge of keeping a good friend for life. So it seems especially fitting that when you are blessed with someone in your life that you can count just as you would the closest sister or brother, you give to them and they to you, a physical sign of your friendship, something you each can keep, wear, cherish and use to remember what you mean to each other.
Friendship rings have long historical roots but have become especially popular in today’s culture where jewelry is used to signify so many emotions and connections. Promise rings exchanged between friends are usually chosen based upon special meaning to them and as tokens of pure friendship, these may be properly worn on any finger of choice, including the thumb if so desired. In the USA the left hand ring finger should be avoided, as should the right hand ring finger in other cultures. This will help avoid any confusion regarding romantic intentions between the friends.
