Promise Rings…the What, Why and How
Ask any upstanding person “What is a promise?” and they most likely will answer
“Giving your word, or making an oath, that you will do something or not do something.”
We all make promises, usually to ourselves about little things that we really intend to do but we know also that the world will not end if we cannot keep the promise to ourselves.

It is when we make a promise to another person that it gets more serious, and there usually will be some consequence if we don’t keep our promise. The matter gets really sticky when the matter is serious, when it is truly important to the other person, and most times to us, too. And when it involves a promise of love and caring for another, then we are in the major leagues of the promise world, the place where hearts are on the line and each day begins with warm thoughts for another very special person. This type of promise is more than words, it is a commitment of the heart and for this promise, words are not enough.

The Sign of a Promise
A promise of true and lasting friendship between two good friends is certainly a sharing of ones heart with another. An expression of love between two people with a promise of a lasting commitment is an even more serious type of promise. In either of these situations, a physical token or signal of such commitment is usually exchanged which becomes a visible sign of each for the other, and of both to all others. It says to one, “I am yours” and to others, “I am promised to another.” Several common types of such are:

  • A Pure Friendship Promise in which truly good friends exchange common rings or other tokens to remind each of the other, whether they are in the same town or around the world from each other.
  • A Promise of Love to be Formalized Later in which a couple, feeling the strong bond of love for each other, express it with modest rings commonly called pre-engagement rings
  • A Promise to Remain Pure in which an adolescent pledges to remain chaste until marriage. Referred to as Purity rings, these may be given by a parent to a child who makes such a pledge, or by either of a couple that pledges such to the other. Purity rings have also become popular with those who pledge to remain drug or alcohol free in their lifetime.

Whatever the reason for giving a promise to another, whether in words or physical sign, it is critically important that both the giver and the recipient of the promise understand clearly the meaning and message of the promise. Follow one simple rule and you will never go wrong in this: Say what you mean….and mean what you say.

Promise Ring Roots
Certainly promises are nothing new. Mankind has made promises ever since verbal language came into use. It is even possible to imagine cavemen, with only grunts and groans, who when leaving the family at the home cave to hunt food, left his treasured sabre-toothed tiger tooth with them as his commitment to return.

Rings, as symbols of royalty, wealth and even promises, have long been used to show a commitment to a cause, purpose or promise to act. Within the Church and in other religions, special rings have been worn to display the promise of the wearer to be faithful to the Church or to the particular movement. Ring exchanges between men and women are documented in Egyptian and Roman literature and simple friendship rings were in vogue in 17th century France.

For the past 200 years, precious gemstones and diamonds, set in rings, have been given as a most serious show of one’s commitment and promise to another and today, even those of more modest means can show that same commitment with beautiful diamonds, gold and silver designs. And because our hands are the most visible and noticeable parts of our physical selves, it is no wonder that a ring, well chosen and artfully designed, is a most fitting expression of a promise made to another.
